Fish Pedicures

The latest craze in spa treatment: dunk your tootsies in a tank of water and let tiny carp nibble away.

The Yvonne Hair and Nails salon in Alexandria, Virginia offers a service where garra rufa (aka Doctor fish) nibble the dead skin of clients' feet. Proprietor John Ho claims that 5,000 customers have had the treatment so far. It costs $35 for 15 minutes and $50 for a half hour.

"This is a good treatment for everyone who likes to have nice feet," Ho said.

He said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators because of concerns about whether they're sanitary.

Accutane for Acne

Accutane is some strong stuff! The chemical name is isotretinoin and Accutane is the best known brand name, though there are generic products on the market. It belongs to the family of medicines called retinoids, which are similar to vitamin A.

Accutane is the most effective drug on the market for treating severe acne. It is also a controversial drug due to the potential side effects (such as birth defects). People who are considering Accutane treatment must have a thorough examination by a doctor, ongoing blood tests and an analysis of medications currently used.

Accutane Treatment

Because Accutane is a powerful medication, it should only be prescribed for severe acne cases. Patients must have ongoing blood tests and constant monitoring of cholesterol levels, liver enzymes and triglycerides in order to detect any adverse side effects. Doctors must be made aware of any medication and over the counter the remedies used by their patients. Certain over-the-counter acne products do not mix well with Accutane.

Women who are planning a family must not become pregnant during treatment because Accutane is known to cause birth defects. Some doctors order pregnancy tests and prescribe birth control medication. The FDA has instituted the iPledge program for women who decide to undergo treatment.

Accutane is administered in capsule form and is available in doses of .5mg or 1 mg. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 1.5 mg. The average course of treatment is 15 to 20 weeks. If further treatment is required, the patient must wait 10 weeks after the treatment was discontinued.

It will take several weeks before patients experience the full effect of Accutane. In some cases, the skin will temporarily get worse but then there will be a noticeable decrease in acne.

Side Effects of Accutane

- Skin dryness – use moisturizers
- Nosebleeds - apply petroleum jelly inside the nose
- Dry eyes - over the counter moisturizing drops
- Skin sensitive to sunlight – use a sunscreen with a high SPF rating
- Joint stiffness, bone pain – consult your doctor before using any pain relievers

In some cases, there could be more severe side effects. These require immediate medical attention:

- Headaches, nausea and vomiting

- Depression or psychosis

- Night blindness

- Jaundice, hepatitis or abdominal pain

- Diarrhea, rectal bleeding

Zits be gone!

What the heck are these pesky things?!

Pimples
Inside the pore are sebaceous glands which produce sebum. When the outer layers of skin shed, the dead skin cells left behind may become bonded together by the sebum. This causes a blockage in the pore, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum which builds up behind the blockage.

Common over-the-counter medications for pimples are benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Both medications can be found in many creams and gels used to treat acne through topical application. Both medications help skin slough off more easily, which helps to remove bacteria faster. A regimen of keeping the affected skin area clean plus the regular application of these topical medications is usually enough to keep acne under control.

Severe acne usually indicates the necessity of prescription medication to treat pimples. Prescription medications used to treat acne include isotretinoin, which is a retinoid. Historically, antibiotics such as tetracyclines and erythromycin were prescribed. While they were more effective than topical applications of benzoyl peroxide, the bacteria eventually grew resistant to the antibiotics and the treatments became less and less effective. Also, antibiotics had more side effects than topical applications, such as stomach cramps and severe discoloration of teeth.

For the severest cases dermatologists may prescribe oral isotretinoin (Accutane), or a vitamin A derivative called Retin-A, which unblocks pores and prevents pimples. This treatment is highly effective but has many side effects, including birth defects in some babies born to women using it.

Some helpful tips are sure to improve the skin:
• Keep your bed linens clean, as dead skin, oil, cosmetics, hair preparations and dirt on the linen will be picked up by your skin while you sleep and help clog pores.

• Products containing benzoyl peroxide are also very beneficial topical cleansing agents. However, if you are using products containing benzoyl peroxide, make extra efforts to screen yourself from the sun.

• A soap with aloe vera is good, too, as aloe is a natural wound healer.

• Allergies to cosmetics may be a cause, too, so if your acne started after using new cosmetics, eliminate them for a week to see if the acne clears up.

• Keep your hands away from your face or other affected areas. They contain oils and bacteria that promote acne. Wash your hands frequently.

• Take a steam shower or boil some water on the stove and put your head over the vapors for a few minutes. This will open up the pores and they can be cleaned out more easily.

• Avoid greasy creams and cosmetics, especially ones that contain oils and dyes, and avoid medications that contain bromides or iodides.

Caution! It is very tempting to pop whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Whiteheads are clogged pores below the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and should not be squeezed. Blackheads are clogged pores on the surface, and also should not be scrubbed or squeezed, but removed with an extractor that you can buy at a pharmacy. Pimples may be squeezed when they are infected and have yellow pus if the proper procedures are followed. Apply a warm compress to the area for a few minutes to open the pores, then squeeze with a clean tissue until all the pus runs out. This will allow the pimple to heal properly. Using fingernails will promote scarring and may be covered with bacteria that will enter the area and cause inflammation.

Shaping the Nose

Makeup can do wonders, it can even change the shape of your nose!

- Broad Nose. Use a foundation that is one shade darker than your natural skintone. Sweep along the sides of the nose with a small, firm makeup brush. Start just below the inner corners of the eyebrows, and end at the sides of the nostrils. Stroke a lighter shade of foundation down the bridge of the nose. Blend well.

- Flat Nose. Apply highlight down the center of the nose, avoiding the sides. Smooth and blend down the center.

- Narrow Nose. Sweep concealer that's slightly darker than your natural skintone down the centre of your nose. Then use a lighter shade on the sides of your nose and nostrils.

- Long Nose. Apply a foundation or concealer that is a few shades darker than your natural skintone onto the tip, between and around the nostrils.

- Crooked Nose. Apply two straight lines down the center of the nose. Follow with a lighter foundation on the concave area(the hollow, curved, rounded area). Apply a darker foundation on the convex area (protruding outward)

Conceal Eye Baggage

Some dark circles or eye bags may be due to stress, lack of sleep, or simply heredity. Eye creams won't be able to cure them, so the best trick is to cover them up!

1. Make sure you sleep well

2. Using a concealer brush and light reflective concealer

3. Choose a light reflective concealer. There are many types of concealers on the market, but liquid light reflecting concealers will give better results for under the eyes. Pick one just a shade lighter than your foundation.

4. Tilt your head down so that the raised dark circles under your eyes are more obvious. The bottom of the bags is where the shadow falls and appears darker than the rest so this is where to concentrate coverage.

5. Apply your concealer by lightly dabbing on some along the bottom of the bags. Use a little at first and build up slowly - do not cake it on.

6. Blend, blend, blend the concealer into your skin with your finger. Use a light rolling movement.

7. Try to keep the line under the bag the brightest, so the shadow is neutralized. Apply a little more concealer to the eye, and blend fully up to the lash line, so the skin tone is fully evened out.

Video example should help!

Latest Liposculpture Craze

What's better than liposuction? Probably Lipo-Sculpture. Even if you're thin and toned, you may not have the perfect body image you desire. That's where liposculpture comes in, targeting only the small problem areas you need to.

Liposculpture is a technique of body contouring and skin conditioning. It reduces the appearance of cellulite and helps define the figure. Liposculpture is not supposed to replace or subsitute good diet and excercise. Instead, it is supposed to help you remove stubborn areas of fat that have not responded to other weight loss methods.

Celebrities everywhere are jumping in on this craze. A session could cost about $5,000 and most patients can go back to work the very next day. Here's a great link for common questions and answers on the procedure.

Multipurpose Powder

Powder has many purposes than you may think:

- Set lipstick in place and prevent feathering and lipstick bleeding.

- Dry up excess oils from scalp

- Powder applied over foundation keeps the makeup in place longer

- Apply loosely under the eyes to catch loose makeup

- Powder softens any look, eliminates shine, and keeps foundation from creasing

Mascara Tip of the Day

Avoid pumping the mascara brush in and out of the tube. This will only let air into the tube and dry out the mascara. Try rotating the wand in a circular motion and pulling it out.

To prevent the mascara from clumping, dab a tissue around the wand and remove excess color prior to applying.

Make Sure Your Designer Glasses Have UV Protection!

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can burn your skin AND the corneas and conjunctivas of your eyes. Plus, long-term UV exposure can lead to eye disease like cataracts and macular degeneration. Sunglasses that block UV light are a great way to help protect your vision, but you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on them.

The American National Standards Institute has set some guidelines that can help you pick the right pair. They say that glasses should block UVB by 99% and UVA radiation by 95 percent. Make sure the glasses are clearly labeled with the type of protection the offer. The glasses should indicate the level of protection they provide. If the glasses aren’t labeled with a specific UV claim then they're not worth buying. Special lenses such as blue blockers, polycarbonate, and polarized lenses may block some UV light but without special coatings the lenses do not meet the UV minimum blockage requirements.

Look for these voluntary industry labels that manufacturers should be using:

- Cosmetic = 70% UV reduction
- General purpose = 95% UV reduction
- Special purpose = 99% UV reduction
- UV-400 and UV absorption up to 400nm = 99% UV reduction

The UV protectant coating doesn’t have a color, so don’t think that darker lenses provde better protection. The tint or color of the lens simply doesn’t matter.

UV labeling is what you should look for, not a high price tag. Taken from the Glaucoma Research Institute:

" The good news is that sunglasses don’t have to be expensive to protect your eyes and they can often be found at the local drugstore. Unfortunately, a high price is not always a guarantee of high quality and protection. Part of the difficulty is that standards and labeling regarding UV protection are voluntary, not mandatory-and can be confusing."

Tips for Asian Shaped Eyes

Found a great video to accentuate the asian eye and create a crease. Enjoy!

Tips for Bug Bites on Your Beautiful Skin

26 bug bites and counting - that's what I experienced after my recent travels. So I learned a few tips the hard way!

- Do not puncture, poke at, or pop the wound or blister. When I did this, the site turned red, and another one spread the venom from the bite. The logic here is to release the toxic stuff from your body. You can try it but be very clean and cautious.

- Take Benadryl. It works wonders for itchiness. Watch out for the marked drowsiness though.

- Apply a little hydrocortisone. Not too much though. Not sure if I put too much but my bites (compared to friends) turned out big, swollen, and a deep red. Looked pretty scary!

- Do not apply tiger balm or white flower serum (found in asian stores). The mintiness seems to irritate my bites and made them bigger and worse.

- Keep the area clean, and do not scratch!!

- Pop your multi vitamins. Not sure if it's the fish oil tablets or vitamin b supplements but my body seemed to heal faster this way.

The rest you will just have to wait it out, be patient and they will heal!

Understanding Sunscreens

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a multiplier of your skin’s ability to resist burning. So if normally your skin burns after 10 minutes of sun exposure, applying sunscreen with an SPF 10 will increase the exposure time to 110 mins before you get burned.

Sunlight is composed of radioactive rays, which get filtered out by the atmosphere layers of the Earth. Of all the dangerous rays that the sun emits, the ones that reach our skin are the UV rays.

UVB rays stimulate vitamin D production, appearance of moles, and can lead to sunburn with overexposure. There are more UVB rays in sunlight in the summer. UVA rays are responsible for tanning of the skin, as well as negative effects of sun exposure like as wrinkles and melanoma.

The SPF rating that comes on sunscreen bottles is determined by an FDA required in vivo test which involves exposing volunteers’ skin to the sun until it sunburns and then evaluating the protection factor that the sunscreen gave that skin.

Some studies have shown that sunscreen’s protection factor doesn’t rise as evenly above SPF30 as it does in the ratings below. Recently this number has been raised to 50 but keep in mind that SPF50 isn’t twice as good as SPF25.

Look for products labelled as UVA/UVB broad spectrum, and don’t forget to check the ingredients for zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, and ecamsule (aka Mexoryl) which are all effective at blocking UVA.

Hair be gone - depilatories

Depilatories (such as Veet, Nair) contain chemicals that dissolve the proteins in the hair so the fibers break off. The chemical process is actually a more extreme version of the permanent wave process, which is also related to hair relaxers.

Since skin is made of keratin protein, it can also be attacked by the thio reaction. Beware of skin burns or irritation of the hair follicle (folliculitis). Using depilatories can sometimes cause ingrown hairs as the broken hairs grow beneath the surface of the skin. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions and test a small patch to assess for irritation or allergic reactions. Don't ever use these products on eyebrows, near mucous membranes, or on broken skin.

All about hair coloring

Temporary hair color is basically a colorful gel or cream that coats your hair (sometimes even sprays). It lasts a couple of shampoos at best. Use this type for fun! Get wild and make your hair super red, pink, blue,or even orange!

Semi Permanent Dyes use ingredients known as “direct dyes.” They stain the hair and take several shampoos to wash out (some last up to 6 weeks). They are a great way to let you experiment with a touch of color without long-term commitment.

Permanent hair color (oxidative) is the most serious type of color. It typically involves bleaching your hair to remove the natural color, then adds in color molecules to lock inside the hair shaft. It should last until your roots grow out but some fading from washing will occur. Although the color can last months and look great, the chemical process is damaging to the hair.

Daily Tanning Lotions to the Test

Ok, it's time to get some color! I've tried a few of the popular brands, pictures of my color to come :)

Jergen's Daily Glow Moisturizer $4.99

Original product for tanning plus moisturizer in one! Works great actually, the only setback is the fragrance. The tan builds gradually as it claims!

Jergen's Express Daily Moisturizer $6.99

I would like to like this express version, but for some reason I developed a yellow tint and my friend developed an orange one. Fragrance is better than the daily version.

Aveeno Custom Color Daily Moisturizer $7.99

This version you can turn the dial to go from light to darker in seconds. This one worked ok, slightly yellow, but I didn't care for the smell.

Loreal Sublime Daily Glow $6.99

This one is as good as the Jergen's daily formula, but with added shimmer. It smells better, but my skin had a reaction to the sparkling ingredients.

Sweep your way to beauty

Instant clean up tip: Try a brow gel or a brow 'pomade' and sweep the brows up and out. Anastasia has great products for this.

The Browfix was a thick pencil that instantly held the hairs together in place. However, since I have thin eyebrows it seemed to sweep mine all together.

I prefer Anastasia's Brow Gel, a little goes a long way. One tube lasted me 3 months! It also makes sweeping the brows up with a shadow/brow bush easy so the hairs don't all stick together into a thin line. Worth every penny $21 (even comes in colors)

Beautiful Skin in your 30's

Cleanser: In the morning, use a cleanser with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to encourage exfoliation. In the evening, wash with a creamy cleanser.

Moisturizer: In addition to SPF 20 with UVA/UVB protection, your moisturizer should contain antioxidants, like green or white tea, pomegranate, or vitamin C, which will protect your skin from damaging free radicals.

Use an eye cream daily.
For dark circles, use one with licorice or kojic acid
For brightening, try vitamin C or soy
For puffiness, look for one containing caffeine

Night time treatment: Choose a night cream or serum with Retinol.

Safety of Botox Questionable?

Cosmetic surgery is SURE to get rid of wrinkles, temporarily at least. But what are the long term effects?

Despite their hype, most wrinkle creams do not have a significant effect on actually reducing wrinkles (I'm still in denial though!). The creams are typically just great moisturizers with an added special ingredient or two that makes for a good campaign but doesn’t actually do anything.

The exceptions are products with effective levels of retinoids. Keep that in mind when purchasing products!

So, what really removes wrinkles? Celebrity favorite - Botox - does. Unfortunately it’s expensive and involves numerous surgical procedures. Botox treatments have been around since the early 1980’s and were approved by the FDA in 2002. But is it safe?

Scientists have found evidence that the toxin used in Botox treatments was shown to migrate into the brains of treated rats. They say there were no observable negative effects, but consumers need to beware of this. They could be exposing their brain to a known toxin ...but there has been no indication that treatments have caused any damage yet, so we'll have to wait years to see what science finds!

Quickie: Bronzer Tip

To achieve the most believable and real sun-kissed look, apply bronzer around the perimeter of the face and then blend in. Then, add the pinkish "sun" color to the apples of your cheek. Apply a copper eyeshadow onto the lids and a pretty pink lipgloss to keep it natural.

Stain for Spring

A new trend this spring is the "stained" look for lips and cheeks.

Apply stain to freshly moisturized cheeks and lips. Simply smile and dab onto the apples of the cheek by softly patting with fingers. Pat onto moistened lips as well to create a very soft, simple and sexy look.

Keep the eye simple with a taupe shadow, and line only the upper lash line with a navy pencil. Finally, take lashes to the extreme with two coats of jet black mascara.

Choosing and Using Foundation

First, decide how much coverage you need. Sheer foundations are good for a light natural coverage. Moderate coverage is a good choice for those of us with some discoloration, a few acne scars, or some freckles. Full coverage foundations offer the most camouflaging that is good for covering burns, birthmarks, bruising, and scars.

The best place to test the color of a foundation is the side of your face between your cheek and jaw line. Your goal when you apply the foundation on the lower part of your face is to find the color that appears the same shade as your neck. During summer months you may want to go a shade darker.

Caucasian women have a tendency toward red pigmentation in the face, which is why they flush and their skin can become red and blotchy. A foundation with some yellow pigment is good to balance out the redness.

African American women tend to have oilier skin, which can turn the foundation darker than it first looked on the skin. Choose shades a bit lighter than the skin and stay with shades with warm honey tones. Avoid overly yellow or olive shades, since they will turn ashy and grey after application.

Mediterranean, Latin, and Asian women have a more olive tone to their skin. Olive/beige/neutral toned foundations with a yellow undertone work best.

Applying Foundation
When applying foundation, don’t forget your eyelids, in the corners of your nose and over your lips. The end goal when applying makeup to the face is to make the color tones of the face match your neck.

After applying foundation, simply blot with a tissue if you feel there is too much. This will eliminate excess oil or moisture from the foundation.

When using thick concealer as foundation, it is important to set it with powder. It will keep the foundation from running, creasing, or smudging. It will also prevent it from cracking into any lines around the eyes. This process will also work to cover areas with acne scars.

To keep the foundation looking fresh and natural, follow with a light dusting of a translucent loose powder using a powder brush set the foundation.

Instant eye brightener

The fastest solution for dark circles is to apply concealer. Choose a gold-based color that matches your skin shade exactly (the gold will counter-act the blue of the under eye circles).

The most common mistake made when applying concealer is choosing a color that's too light. Another common problem is putting the concealer only under the eye. You should apply it all around the eye area, and be sure to blend well. Set the concealer with a light dusting of translucent face powder. To avoid drawing unwanted attention to your under eye area, do not apply eyeliner or mascara to your lower lashes.

Apply a white shimmer pencil to the inner corner of the eye, as that is often the darkest part.

Priscilla's ageless beauty secrets

For being 60+ years old, she looks great! I did notice that she is very pale...and don't think she's denied plastic surgery, but still... Anyways, she'll also be seen on Dancing with the Stars next season.

From Priscilla Presley's own website:
Explore your body and get in touch with all aspects of yourself. Find the exercise that works best for you. I like mixing lightweight training and yoga. I have found that through my own experience, that heavyweight training builds muscle for me. Lightweight training tones and lengthens me. With yoga, it’s a balance of strengthening, toning and relaxing at the same time. This combination of light weight training and yoga have made a real difference for me. Find your exercise regime, which may be a combination of disciplines, and stick with it!

Make-up shouldn't be used to mask your flaws, but to enhance your best features. Walk into natural light with a mirror after applying make-up to see what the world will see. Don't let the magazines dictate your look by season. Find a look that you feel comfortable with as long as it’s modern and not a look that can date you, always stay current and comfortable.

Women have a sense of adventure for many things, but sometimes they stick with a hairstyle they had when they were at their 'best'. Fashion isn't about vanity - it's about living life in the present, with vibrancy. Be modern, be bold, be yourself.

Courtney Cox' skin and hair secrets

I had to dig this one up. If you've ever watched Friends and Family Ties, you'll notice the beautiful actress Courtney Cox has the most amazing complexion and shiniest hair! Her piercing blue eyes with her dark strands go so well together.

1. Healthy, glowing skin is an important part of her look, so before applying any makeup be sure to use a hydrating moisturizer and eye cream. Apply a stick foundationto the skin by dotting lightly on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin, and blend with your fingertips for a sheer, natural finish.

To conceal under the eyes, use a stick foundation one shade lighter than your all-over color. Set the look by applying a little loose powder only under the eyes and down the center of the face.

2. To define the brow, use a brow brush to apply a warm brown shade to the eyebrow. Focus the color on areas where the brow is sparse.

3. Using a shading brush, apply matte white shadow all over the eyelid. Use a shadow brush to apply a silvery shimmer to the lid, starting at the lash line and working into the crease. As a final touch, apply a soft gray shadow very lightly to the crease only and blend well.

4. To line the eyes, use a damp eyeliner brush and apply a charcoal shadow to both the top and bottom lashes. You want the eye to be completely lined from corner to corner. Apply thickening mascara to both the top and bottom lashes.

5. Warm the cheeks using a gel stick blush. Smile to find the apples of your cheeks. Apply color to this area, then use your fingertips to blend back and down over the cheekbones.

6. Apply a cream lipgloss in a warm maple color using a lip brush. Finish by lightly outlining your natural contour with a liner in a similar color to define and enhance the mouth.

7. To give your cheeks a modern high shine, warm a small amount of moisture balm between your fingers and gently tap along the cheekbones. The look is hydrated and glowing, not greasy.

To get the shiny tresses, all you need is a blow-dryer, flat iron, and a dollop of shine pomade! Also, the gleam in Courteney's hair is due to long layers and the moisturizing formulas of her hair-care products. Deep-conditioning once a month is a must. Cox's favorite: Kerastase Nutritive Nutradefense ($65), a mask rich in strengthening proteins. Before blow-drying, part your hair in half, apply a golf-ball-size amount of conditioning mousse to each side, and comb through. Try Kerastase Mousse Nutri-Sculpt. Next, use a paddle brush to blow-dry; increase shine by aiming the airflow downward from roots to ends. Finish with Logics Shine Illuminating serum ($17; logicshair.com) to smooth flyaways.

Instant Abs - No Excercise Required

Another celebrity secret - yes, we know they use self tanners or bronzers to look instantly tanned. Did you know many use the tanners to create body contour and toning effects?

First, lay a strip of tape down the middle of the stomach. Then place three pieces on each side of the middle tape.Spray with DHA  (sunless tanner) wait 20 minutes and then remove tape

Make sure to be careful with the tape marks, but they will fade and blend over time. You can also try using a stencil or eyeliner to outline the abdominal muscles.

Blooming Spring Colors

Latest beauty trends for Spring:

Lilac and Silver Eyes
Layered shades of amethyst and silver create a cool ethereal effect.

Mushroom Shadow

Indigo (blue) Liner
Deep blue liner is a fresh alternative to standard black. The rich color is vibrant, but less harsh.

Peach Lips
Peach lips instantly brighten the entire face. Try a peach lip gloss—its texture and shine come across as softer and more natural than lipstick.

This matte stain—like the one you get from sipping red wine—is a softer way to wear red.

Icy Accents
These pale, shimmery hues have the right amount of color and gleam.

Rose on the apples of the cheeks—with a swipe of bronzey blush in the hollows—adds natural-looking depth, warms up the face, and looks refined.

Finding the best hair color for your skin tone

Apologies for the lack of posts... work has been busy! I did manage to find an interesting tip on selecting hair color that'll make you look great!

Knowing your skin tone is very important in helping you choose the best hair color to make you sizzle. The first thing you should determine is whether your skin tone is warm or cool.

One way to tell is to check the color of our veins. If they appear more blue then the have cool tones, if green then you have warm tones.

Another way to determine your tone is to drape 2 scarves next to your face - a blue and an orange one. Whichever ones looks best determines your tone(blue means you're cool, orange means you're warm)

Brow tips for different hair color...

If you are blonde, or have light eyebrows, there is something you can do to look more attractive instantly! Just darken your eyebrows slightly with an eyebrow pencil or powder. Makeup artists often will give their blonde celebrity clients a light-browed look for a daytime event and a dark-browed look for a dramatic evening look. Be sure to apply eyebrow pencil with soft, feathery strokes and use a shade in the blonde family to look natural.

Brunettes should have no trouble finding an eyebrow enhancer. Just remember to keep it soft, like a medium brown. Any darker is too severe, even for midnight-haired strands. Makeup artists tend to agree that girls with black hair usually look best with a dark brown brow enhancer rather than a black one, which could look too severe.

Red-haired, celebrity makeup artists often use an auburn eyebrow pencil on their red-haired clients during the daytime and a light brown eyebrow enhancer at night.

Fake lashes in seconds

Since I just showed 2 of my friends, I'll post my version on how to apply fake lashes.

First dab some eyelash glue on the front of your hand.

Use tweezers to slowly take the lashes out of the container. Still using the tweezers, glide the base of the lashes across the glue on your hands.

Wait at least 10 seconds for the glue to get taut. Use both hands and gently hold each side of the band of lashes. Close one eye and align the lashes to your lid. Gently let it sit there and apply pressure to get the glue to stick to your lid.

Hold for 10 seconds. Using the tweezers or a makeup brush, gently push the base of the fake lashes to your eyelid to ensure they will stick and stay.

Apply a layer of lashes, gently comb out so they blend. You're done!

Blushing trick

I learned a new trick this weekend! To get your cheekbones to stand out, apply blush at the apples of the cheek and sweep out and up.

Then add a little bit of shimmer, like Laura Mercier 'Pink Mosaic' Shimmer Bloc. Put some on the top of the cheeks -between the upper cheekbone and eyes - and it'll make your cheekbones pop in pictures.

Tattoo removal

There are a few ways to do this, however keep in mind it will be just as painful as getting one done!

Laser surgery is considered by many doctors and patients to be the best way to remove a tattoo. A numbing cream is usually applied to the area before the treatment. Once the skin is ready, the laser is placed over the tattoo, as pulses of light shoot out of the laser and onto the skin. Each blast of light from the laser breaks up the tattoo pigment. The laser is moved across the tattoo in quick, swift movements until the entire area has been treated. Sometimes more than one laser session is needed to completely remove the tattoo. After the treatment, the skin’s scavenger cells do the rest of the work in removing the pigment. While this option is one of the most popular, it can leave scarring or discoloration.

Excision is a more surgical method of removing a tattoo. This option works best for small tattoos. After a local anesthetic is applied to numb the skin, the entire tattoo is surgically removed. The edges of the skin are then pulled together and sutured shut in order to heal. Excising a tattoo gets rid of it completely but in some cases, a skin graft may be needed. Scarring and bleeding are common.

Dermabrasion is another method of tattoo removal that involves sanding down the tattooed area, causing the skin to peel off. The tattoo is removed in small portions by using a solution that freezes the area. After the designated area has been sanded down with an abrasive rotary tool, the layers of skin containing the pigment will peel off. Bleeding of the area is common and may need to be bandaged to prevent infection. This process can be uncomfortable and can also result in skin discoloration or scarring.

Start saving money!

Wear sunscreen daildy: especially one that contains zinc oxide. The sun ages us more than just about anything else, and it’s easy and relatively cheap to wear sunscreen every day. You'll save money in the longrun from thousands of dollars spend on wrinkle creams.

Use proven ingredients. Retinol and retinoids are still the best proven anti-aging skin care ingredients.

Avoid tanning salons. Not only will you save money you wasted on tanning, but you will be preventing future damage to your skin, which you will later regret.

Quit smoking. You save lots of money, and preventing your skin from aging extremely prematurely.

Return products you don't like. Most department stores and drug stores allow you to return products you don’t like, even if you’ve opened them. Check the return policy and keep the receipts. My fave stores are Sephora and Nordstrom!

Try generic versions of prescription medications. Some acne and wrinkle creams come in generic versions, so ask your doctor to allow substitutions on your prescription.

Take advantages of sales. Stock up on your favorite products.

Get the gift with purchase. Some department store brands have “gift with purchase” bonuses a few times a year. You get great travel sizes of products, bags, and more!

Search for deals and coupons. Cosmetricks users often post specials and deals (thank goodness!).

Eyelash growth products can be dangerous!

Approximately $2 Million of Potentially Harmful "Cosmetic" Eye Product Seized
Product contains drug ingredient, makes unapproved drug claims, could damage eye

At the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Marshals seized today 12,682 applicator tubes of Age Intervention Eyelash, a product that may, in some users, lead to decreased vision. Authorities said the sales value of the seized tubes is approximately $2 million.

Age Intervention Eyelash is sold and distributed by Jan Marini Skin Research, Inc., of San Jose, Calif.

The FDA considers Age Intervention Eyelash to be an unapproved and misbranded drug because Jan Marini Skin Research has promoted the product to increase eyelash growth. Before a new drug product may be legally marketed, it must be shown to be safe and effective, and approved by FDA. The agency takes seriously its responsibility to protect Americans from unapproved drugs.

FDA also considers the seized Age Intervention Eyelash to be an adulterated cosmetic. The product contains bimatoprost, an active ingredient in an FDA-approved drug to treat elevated intraocular pressure (elevated pressure inside the eye).

For patients using the prescription drug, using the Age Intervention Eyelash in addition to the drug may increase the risk of optic nerve damage because the extra dose of bimatoprost may decrease the prescription drug's effectiveness. Damage to the optic nerve may lead to decreased vision and possibly blindness.

In addition, use of Age Intervention Eyelash may cause other adverse effects in certain people due to the bimatoprost, including macular edema (swelling of the retina) and uveitis (inflammation in the eye), which may lead to decreased vision.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California filed the complaint requesting the seizure, and coordinated with the FDA. The California Department of Public Health‘s Food and Drug Branch had previously embargoed the seized products at the San Jose facility. Jan Marini Skin Research has notified FDA that the company ceased manufacturing and shipping any Age Intervention Eyelash product containing bimatoprost last year.

The FDA recommends that consumers, dermatologists, and estheticians who may still have Age Intervention Eyelash discontinue using it and discard any remaining product. FDA also recommends that consumers consult their health care provider if they have experienced any adverse events that they suspect are related to the product's use.

Hair Extensions

Have you noticed the amount of celebrities who all of a sudden have long, flowing locks? The key to their fabulous hair is the clever use of hair extensions, carefully blended to match exactly with their own hair.

Hair extensions offer instant volume for limp tresses or emergency relief from a disastrous haircut and can last up to 3 months.

Some things that you should know about caring for hair extensions:

• Use a soft bristle brush and brush your hair from the bottom and gently work your way up.

• Gently tie your hair up while sleeping.

• Do not color your own hair extentions at home.

• To prevent tangling, run your fingers through the braid extensions.

• Don't spray your extensions with conditioners or any silicone based products as they can cause the braids to slip.

You can have any length you want up to about 26"-30". Anything longer than this puts extra weight on your scalp which may lead to damage to your own hair. The best looking hair extensions for average height women are usually around 22" or less.

Hair extensions can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars so you'll need to shop around.

The application of extensions should not hurt. The extensions artist should braid the tracks firmly but comfortably. The tension should be even all over your head with no points pulling or hurting.

Food for thought

Foods that feed your beauty :)

Carrots : Maintain the outer layer of the skin to prevent premature aging. Find the benefits as you do from RetinA

Cheese : Choose Swiss, cheddar, or gouda to block bacteria in the mouth and prevent cavities.

Citrus Fruits : Hold the skin cells together by forming collagen. Collagen cannot be added to the skin topically, which is why fruits and fruit juices are such an important part of the daily diet.

Cranberries, blueberries: antioxidants

Garlic: Helps combat wrinkles and restores tissues.

Nonfat Yogurt: High in calcium, keeps your smile white and your teeth cavity-free.

Sweet Potatoes: Vitamin A is known to be an anti-wrinkling agent. Sweet potatoes are full of this important vitamin.

Tomatoes: Rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium.

Wheat Germ: If you want to get rid of pimples quickly and efficiently, make sure to include two or three tablespoons a day in your diet.

Aloe Vera - the secret noone wants you to know

One day at a party I overheard someone talking about aloe vera gel directly from the plant and how it made her skin soft. The girls then told me the plants were very affordable, and you can find them almost anywhere. So I looked into the benefits of the gel, after all it is recommended for treating sun burns to promote relief and healing.

Aloe Vera is a cactus-like plant that is actually part of the lily family. The Aloe barbadensis variety exhibits the best medicinal properties. It contains an array of material including: Amino Acids, Enzymes, Lectin, Lipids, Minerals, Lactates, Salicylates, Phenolics, Polysaccharides, Urea, Nitrogen and numerous vitamins.

Burn and Wound Healing: Aloe Vera is best known for its soothing and healing effects on burns and wounds. Keep it around when going out in the sun!

Aging of the Skin: Components of Aloe Vera have been found to reverse degenerative skin changes by stimulating collagen and elastin synthesis, in essence turning back the clock on the effects aging has on skin.

Immune System Restoration: Research has proven that Aloe Vera prevent suppression of the skin's immune system. This suppression may be one of the causes of skin cancer.

Moisturizer: Studies show that Aloe Vera improves the skin's ability to hydrate itself, aids in the removal of dead skin cells and has an effective penetrating ability that helps transport healthy substances through the skin. Each of these factors make Aloe Vera an ideal ingredient in cosmetic and dermatological products.

Anti-Inflammatory: Aloe Vera promotes a variety of anti-inflammatory responses in the body, reducing swelling from injuries and promoting recovery from infections. Such anti-inflammatory responses enhance the overall wound healing process.

I'm excited to try this out for my new wrinkles - I went and bought a bottle of the capsules from GNC. Going to try it out on my face for a month, wish me luck!

Create seductive eyes

The eyelashes are not just strands of hair that rim our eyelids. They are gifts that Mother Nature gave us to protect and shield our eyes from dust and other foreign bodies. And because we communicate a lot with our eyes, our eyelashes help us put color and meaning to our words with the way we flutter and bat our eyelashes.

It would be infinitely nicer and infinitely more effective, though, if the lashes that we bat and flutter look long, thick and immaculate. We do not have to be born with long and thick eyelashes to be able to have seductive-looking eyes, though. After all, what is makeup for? All it takes is the touch of the magical mascara wand.

Mascara does magic for our lashes as long as it is correctly applied, in such a way that there are no globs of the stuff clinging to our lashes and that each strand is separated from the other. Nothing ruins the effect of mascara than globs and lash strands clumped together.

To avoid dried globs and clumping strands, apply the mascara to the base of the lashes with the mascara wand and then give the wand a wiggle. Afterwards, carefully brush the mascara to the ends of the lashes with the use of a lash comb. Or if you do not want to use a lash comb, just wipe the excess mascara from your wand with a piece of tissue before touching it to your lashes.

Another thing that makes mascara look ugly is if it smudges. Sometimes, the smudge happens because the eye cream or the concealer used is oil-based and still wet. You can prevent the smudging by applying powder first onto your lower eyelids before putting on the mascara. Also, try not to blink while putting the mascara on, or else it will definitely stick to your eyelids rather than to your lashes.

Celebrities without makeup

Wow, this just shows what makeup can do! Check out this video of celebs without makeup! Again, I wish I had my own professional makeup artist :)

Ok to conserve

For those who go to the extent of buying $75+ worth of products just to get a few sample packets of items, try this:

Use a pin and poke a hole in the sample package. Squeeze out just enough product to use. This helps the product last longer and you're seriously squeezing out every drop ;)

Melting Shadow?

Melting eyeshadow is a problem for many, but there is a way to make it "stick" a little longer. If you use a damp eyeshadow brush and apply a layer of face powder to your lids and allow to set, the shadow will stay in place for the day. It takes an extra second or so but the effort is well worth it.

Another simple option is to use simply use a shadow base in a neutral beige color first- its worth the investment!

Applying false lashes

False lashes are perfect for special occasions or when you want to have
some fun! Follow these basis steps when applying the falsies:

- Using a tweezer, dip the base end of the lashes into the glue, then
place the lashes as close to the base of your own lashes as you can.
- Fill in wherever you want the greatest impact, usually the mid to
outer lashes
- Press gently but firmly
- Hold the lash in place for about 5 seconds, until the glue has a
chance to dry and hold
- Keep a piece of paper handy to hold the lashes
- After the glue is dry, apply a dark eyeliner to camouflage the line
of the fake lashes
and then apply mascara.
-To remove, gently pull them off with tweezers.

My favorite: Ardell's in 110 or 135

First timer at a spa

Bet you're asking - will anyone see me naked?
- Most spas do not require any form of exposure. Rooms are used for one
to undress in, and robes or towels are provided to cover up. In other
situations, the therapistmay leave the room as you undress and get
underneath the sheets. They will also leave the room for you to dress. Keep
in mind that depending on your treatment, i.e. body scrubs, someone
may be in the room servicing you in the buff. If you are shy to this it
is always a good idea to ask the oncierge ahead of time before your
particular treatment.

Also an fyi:
- Gratuity in the Spa industry follows the same standard as any other
service, about 12-17%. Most spas have little envelopes for you to put
the gratuity into and write the name of the recipient as well as your
name, then slip that into the box provided. If payment is not required
until the end of your treatments, you may pay then. The last option would
be to hand them gratuity directly but it's advisable to ask the
concierge beforehand if you are still unsure.

Hair product trial

I tend to do things in excess. For example - when I buy shoes, I don't just buy one pair. I end up with 3 boxes :). My recent binge has been on hair products. My goal was something for volumizing my ultra thin hair, protecting it since it's been colored, while adding shine. Here are my winners for now :)

Pureology: The pink bottle for volume. The styling gel works well for volume and is made for color treated hair. Haven't noticed the color fading from use of this, so we're good. The shampoo and conditioner however are a bit thick and I"m not too fond of the smell.

Frederic Fekkai Technician Color Care: The shampoo, conditioner, and volumizing gloss gel all work very well. My hair color seems to have extended at least an extra week and I like the smell. The only downside is this line is expensive at $20 for the glosser and $22 an 8oz shampoo.

Bumble and Bumble The gentle shampoo doesn't lather as much as I'd like, but I use it with the super rich conditioner and I love my hair afterwards! I also tried the 20 minute deep conditioner that seemed to work well but only needed once a month. The price is a little high but well worth it. $25 for the shampoo and $29 for the conditioner.

Kerastase: Reflection for color treated hair. As much as I wanted to like this product (the fancy website made it seem so exclusive), it didn't do much for me. I didn't notice an improvement in shine or health of the strands. It did make my hair softer and smelled nice. I probably won't be buying this again at $32 for the Bain Noir shampoo and $58 for the Chroma reflect conditioning mask.

Instant Lash Line

found a cool product from Mally ( celebrity makeup artist) when I was out in NYC. Lash liner - draw a line on the upper inner lid and fill in the spaces between your lashes on top of the lid for an eye opening effect!

Tips for those on the go!

Eyes
A single coat of mascara will only take seconds per eye, giving just enough definition to lashes. Dust on some eyeshadow and you should be good to go. Take another second and apply some eyeliner for eyes that pop!

Lips
For a soft, kissable look, slap some tinted lip-gloss on your lips. Lipstick or lip stain will draw more attention to your lips than lip-gloss.

Hair
Buy some cool hair accessories and use them to twist your hair up or pin it back, all in about 30 seconds. Headbands are cool too just to keep the hair out of the face.

Blemishes, scars, and imperfections:
Use a concealer stick or powder makeup to mask blemishes and dark circles under your eyes. Concealing unsightly marks on one’s face should take less than a minute. Visine eye drops may be applied to reduce redness of blemishes before applying concealer.

Refresh: splash on some body spray or perfume, or even body lotion. Just don't overdo it!

Smokey Eyes

The key to the smokey eye affect is blending. The blending of these
colors and the use of highlight shimmer helps keep the look soft and
smokey!

- First apply shadow base to the lids
- Sweep on a highlight concentrating on the upper area near the eyebrow
and the tear duct (this area catches the most light)
- Apply shadow to the lid
- Using an angled brush, apply a gel or dry liner to the lid close to
the lash line. A dark navy blue or plum shadow would work here. Blend
this line.
- Blend in a slightly darker shadow in the crease of the lid

Extend Your Makeup

To make liquid foundation last longer, mix it with a drop of sweat proof sunblock. For blush to last longer, try using a cream version also .For the lips- apply a balm to smooths out, then dust translucent powder followed by the color.

Treat Winter Skin

Lips: run a toothbrush over flakey skin to smooth it out

Hands: Clean with antibacterial wipes instead of soap as that can be very drying

Scalp: Massage scalp once a week with olive oil and a crushed aspirin mixed in it. this adds salicylic acid to help exfoliate dead cells

Arms: Try an at home microdermabrasian kit to get rid of bumps

Back: Try a dry oil body spray to reach that hard area, or put lotion inside of a back scrubber (the ones with the long handles to reach the back)

Heels: Rub in a lactic acid lotion and then a rich foot cream, twice a day if possible.

Body: Shower at night instead of the morning. It may tempt you less to use scalding hot drying water.
